A Christmas Movie For All? - Richard Curtis
What makes Love ACtually particularly special as a Christmas romantic comedy is its celebration of love in all its forms. The movie opens and closes at Heathrow Airport, showing genuine moments of reunion and affection between real people. The Christmas setting provides a magical backdrop with office parties, school performances, and seasonal decorations that enhance the romantic atmosphere. Because, it's Christmas, I think we're all more likely to express our true feelings, whether it's through grand gestures or quiet confessions.
A Sneaky Feeling - Hugh Grant
Love Actually, writen by Richard Curtis, kicks off with a thought-provoking quote delivered by the character David the Prime Minister, setting the stage with authentic scenes from Heathrow Airport where individuals joyfully reunite. These genuine glimpses of humanity, captured through smiles, tears, and hugs, weave a vivid picture of heartfelt emotions. The essence of David's message reverberates through the narrative, establishing a hopeful and inspiring tone throughout the film. His words highlight to the audience that love doesn't solely manifest in vast, awe-inspiring gestures. More frequently, it blooms in the subtle, everyday exchanges that color our existence. It might not always align with perfect timing or convenience, yet the potential for love to flourish perpetually endures, bringing warmth and connection even in the most commonplace moments.[in English]
‘Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there—fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge—they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around.’
More Than One Lobster At The Birth Of Christ? - Emma Thompson
Karen, played by British acting royalty Emma Thompson, merges as one of the most endearing characters through her wit, wisdom, and authenticity in handling life's complexities. Her approach to parenting combines humor and insight, as shown when she casually asks:
There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus.
This, of course, HAD to go on our Love Actually Coaster collection on Etsy.
Lobsters and Octopus Legs
The Nativity Play at the School is a pivotal moment of the movie, with pop stars and a bizarre mix of absolutely charming scenes, including the kiss! But along with lobsters there are also other sea animals present, and Natalie's nieces and nephews are Octopus. On the way to the play with the prime minister, Natalie's gran casually drops a classic line that I think is brilliant
'Eight is a lot of legs, David'.
It's one of those moments you might miss, but it's delivered so well, it has to go on a coaster.
The Jamie and Aurelia Romance.
Jamie, played by Colin Firth, and Aurelia's love story starts at a French farmhouse where Aurelia works as a housekeeper. Despite not speaking each other's languages, they develop a tender friendship through small daily interactions and shared smiles. A pivotal moment occurs when Aurelia dives into a freezing lake to save Jamie's manuscript pages, showing her selfless nature and creating an unforgettable connection between them
[In English] 'It's my favorite time of day, driving you.' - Jamie (Colin Firth)
[in Portuguese] 'It's the saddest part of my day, leaving you.'
Beautiful Aurelia and Jamie (I hate uncle Jamie) hae a wonderful romance and we all leave hoping their true love lasts.
Liam Neeson and Sam
Sam and Daniel's relationship in Love Actually blossoms into one of the film's most touching bonds, as they navigate grief together following the loss of Sam's mother. Their connection deepens when Sam confides in Daniel about being in
"the total agony of being in love"
This leads to a super tender moments of shared understanding. Despite being a stepfather, Daniel proves to be the perfect confidant, supporting Sam through his first crush while they both heal in such a way through humor and honesty.
"Well, we need Kate and we need Leo, and we need them now"
Their relationship reaches a beautiful moment of connection when they share their first laugh since Sam's mother died
The depth of their trust is evident when Sam declares
"Okay - lets do it, Dad. Lets go get the shit kicked out of us by love"
Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson
Daniel says this of his late wife at her funeral. He introduces the song that Joanna wanted him to play by telling those assembled about the exchange they had about it right before she died, in which she insisted, with good humor, that it was precisely the song she wanted to be played.
"Get a grip, people hate sissies. No-one's ever gonna shag you if you cry all the time."
Love Actually: The Gold Necklace, Karen and Harry
The gold necklace storyline in Love Actually, represents one of the film's most poignant plot threads. Harry (Alan Rickman) purchases an expensive gold heart necklace for £370 at Selfridges getting it gift wrapped is a hilarious scene. Karen (Emma Thompson), Harry's wife, later discovers the gorgeous gold necklace while hanging up his coat and assumes it's her Christmas gift. However, on Christmas, Karen realizes the necklace was given to someone else, leading to a heartbreaking confrontation. In one of the most emotionally charged moments of the film, Karen confronts Harry about his terrible mistake.
"Would you wait around to find out if it's just a necklace, or if it's sex and a necklace, or if, worst of all, it's a necklace and love? Would you stay, knowing life would always be a little bit worse? Or would you cut and run?"
Mark and Juliet's Unrequited Love- Andrew Lincoln and Keira Knightley.
This quote, perhaps one of the most famous from Love Actually, is not spoken, but written on a poster. Mark writes a humorous and heartfelt message to Juliet (Keira Knightley) professing his love for her. He suggests that he loves her and will continue to love her, again. - the total agony of love, but also implies that he expects nothing from it.
With any luck, by next year
I'll be going out with one of these girls...
[Pictures of models]
But for now, let me say,
without hope or agenda,
just because it's Christmas—
(and at Christmas you tell the truth)
to me, you are perfect
and my wasted heart will love you
until you look like this...

MERRY CHRISTMAS
Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) .... and Britney Spears
At the end of Love Actually, Billy (Bill Nighy) leaves a glamorous party at Elton John's house to spend the evening with his manager, Joe. He suggests that he had an epiphany that Christmas is about spending time with the people one loves, and that the person he loves most, in spite of his better judgment, is Joe.
"Best Shag You Ever Had?"
"Britney Spears. No, Only Kidding. She Was Rubbish." Billy Mack/ Bill Nighy.
Poor old Britney gets a couple of references in this movie, she was, at the time, selling a hefty number of albums at the top of her game.
"Here's An Important Message From Your Uncle Bill: Don't Buy Drugs. Become A Pop Star And They Give You Them For Free."
When Billy Mack leaves Elton John's party to visit Joe, declaring that "Christmas is a time to be with the people you love"
He then makes the touching admission that without realizing it, he's spent most of his adult life with his "chubby employee" and that Joe might be the 'fucking love of his life'! Is that unconditional love? maybe.
Colin and His Prince William Fantasy
Colin is a charmingly delusional character in Love ACtuallyy, who believes his lack of success with British women is due to geography rather than personality. He develops an amusing theory that American women would find him irresistible simply because of his British accent. Here are three memorable quotes that capture Colin's character:"I am Colin, God of Sex. I'm just on the wrong continent, that's all"
."American girls would seriously dig me with my cute British accent"
.His friend Tony tries to bring him back to reality with the brutally honest response: "People are the same the world over - wherever you go, you'll still be dull and ugly - and girls will still hate you"
Colin assures his doubting friend, Tony, that going to America to look for a popular girl to find love, actually. leaving mouths open. He humorously uses this metaphor to suggest that he is going to score some half naked chicks, as soon as he gets to Wisconsin.
