What Is Structural Mapping In Family Therapy?

A family map is a powerful visual tool that transforms abstract family dynamics into a concrete, observable representation that both therapists and families can see, discuss, and modify together. Using simple elements like squares, lines, and spatial relationships, family maps reveal the complex emotional architecture that words alone often cannot capture.

Why Do We Use Structural Family Mapping?

Visual Representation

In a family map, each family member is represented by a simple square or shape, creating a clear, accessible visual language that everyone—from young children to adults—can understand and engage with. Unlike complex diagrams or technical psychological terminology, these visual representations create an immediate, intuitive understanding of the family system.

By transforming relationships into physical objects that can be seen and moved, family maps help externalize internal perceptions.

Connection and Distance

One of the most powerful aspects of family maps is how they reveal emotional connection and distance between family members. By positioning squares closer together or further apart, family members show:

  • Emotional Closeness - Who feels connected to whom, and how deeply
  • Relationship Intensity - Which relationships dominate the family system
  • Alliances and Coalitions - The natural groupings that form within families
  • Isolation - Which family members may feel disconnected or marginalized

These spatial arrangements make visible the subsystems within families—the parent subsystem, sibling subsystem, and various cross-generational alliances that may be operating beneath the surface. When these patterns are made visible, families often have profound "aha" moments, recognizing dynamics they've felt but never seen clearly before.

Hierarchy and Structure

Family maps reveal the organizational structure that determines how families function:

  • Generational Boundaries - Are the appropriate distinctions between parents and children maintained?
  • Decision-Making Patterns - Who makes decisions and how are they implemented?
  • Role Flexibility - How rigid or adaptive are family roles?
  • Structural Balance - Is the family organization balanced or skewed?

Power and Influence Dynamics

Perhaps most revealing is how family maps illustrate the distribution of power and influence:

  • Size Representation - Larger squares often indicate those perceived to have more power
  • Central Positioning - Who occupies the central space in the family system
  • Direction of Influence - Arrows or lines can show who influences whom
  • Voice and Agency - The positioning often reveals whose voice carries weight

Oliver Drakeford: Clinical Director and Licensed Therapist

If we've not met, I'm Oliver, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Los Angeles. Although I only work in private practice today, I started my career ten years ago as a therapist in adolescent residential treatment centers. I was hired to be the Clinical Director of a new teen treatment center and created an entire program focused around Family Systems Theory.

The skills and techniques I teach in this course were developed and honed over years of clinical application. These techniques have helped countless families break through barriers when traditional methods reached their limits. More importantly I've seen and trained other therapists to use these techniques too and have seen dramatic the results can be for others.

The course combines structural family therapy principles with projective techniques and spatial relationship work to teach you powerful therapeutic ways of thinking and working.

Advanced Family Mapping - An Online Course

You know the feeling! You're sitting across from a family, sensing the underlying dynamic that's causing their pain, but they just can't put it into words. OR, you've tried session after session, to guide the dialogue to get your clients to see what they're missing... and nothing works.

What if you could help them see what words alone can't express?

That's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Family Mapping. I love this technique so much I put all of the ways I use it into one course to share with you. It's available now for only $19.99. Everything is designed for immediate clinical application. No elaborate materials needed - you'll learn how to use simple objects, paper, or even digital tools to create powerful visual experiences for your clients.

What's In the Family Mapping Course?

Mapping As A Projective Technique

Incorporating elements of psychodrama with the projective method of psychoanalytic theory, we can use Family Mapping to real the rich inner world of our clients. I've seen this technique reduce adults to tears.

Educational Intervention

Most often we use Family Mapping to understand our clients, but when you learn how to use them to educate, demonstrate and highlight problematic behaviors, it can shift treatment and jumpstart progress.

Family Therapy Activities

Once you master using Family Mapping, I've a hunch it will be your 'go-to' activity to do with a family. It educates, informs, creates insight and can even change stuck family dynamics.

  • Ways to recognize healthy vs. unhealthy family structures
  • Techniques to visualize complex family relationships that words alone can't capture

Module 2: Family Activities

You'll explore two detailed case studies demonstrating how family mapping reveals hidden dynamics: one showing how diffuse boundaries affect children's development, and another illuminating rigid family structures that prevent adult children from growing independently.

  • How to set up and facilitate engaging mapping activities for families
  • Specific questions and prompts to elicit meaningful dialogue
  • Processing techniques to help families see their own dynamics from a fresh perspective
  • Methods to work with families who struggle with direct communication

Module 3: Projective Elements

Take your family mapping skills to a deeper level by incorporating powerful projective techniques that access the unconscious mind and reveal what words cannot express.

  • How to use objects, images, and symbols to unlock hidden family dynamics
  • Techniques to interpret symbolic choices clients make in their family maps
  • Ways to work with resistance through projection
  • Methods to facilitate profound insights even with clients who struggle with emotional expression

Module 4: Impasses & Break-Throughs

Break through therapeutic impasses with innovative timeline mapping techniques that reveal the influence of the past and create pathways to a different future.

  • How to create historical family maps that reveal the origins of current patterns
  • Techniques to help clients identify and articulate unspoken family rules
  • Methods to use mapping to envision future possibilities and potential changes
